Like the final curtain coming down on a Broadway Show, the Killington Ski Resort entered it's last day of the 2011-2012 ski season with a curtain of cloud draping Superstar, the last trail standing. To pretend that this has not been a strange winter season at Killington would require a feat of self delusion worthy of an ostrich with it's head in the sand.

Combined, Mary and I don't have a prayer at ever stopping work.... While heavy wet snow was falling across the Killington Resort yesterday, we were dutifully fulfilling our obligations to the State of Vermont and the US Government by working on our tax package to give to our acco.

Proving once again that weather in Killington is anything but consistent, the region was visited last night by a fine dusting of snow. More like a pixie dust raining from the heavens, it was just enough this morning to cover roof tops, coat windshields, and cast a white frosting on the tops of the Green Mountains all around the Killington Region Now so we don't get ahead of ourselves, we are tal.

OK... you planned on coming to Killington this weekend, but you think a week of 70 degree days has reduced skiing and riding at Killington to boogie boarding and surfing. But you still want, dare I say need, to get that one last mountain fix before the onset of panic sets in caused by having to spend lots of time with family during Passover, or Easter.

Warm temperatures have descended across the 6 mountains of Killington, blazing a trail of soft snow and large bumps in it's wake. While I did not ski today, (my last day on the hill was Friday), large bumps are being observed being created on all of the trails of the resort.

Flat and Fast! Low energy ski day at Killington

In the words of my friend, Billy Mac, "point em down hill you chicken @#!t". Today was a very flat and fast day at Killington. It was one of those days where you pointed the skis down hill and voila - instant Super G racer! The weather leading into today has continued to be interesting at Killington.

After a beautiful, bright, sunny Sunday that had our day dominated by work in the morning and football in the afternoon, Mary and I had a chance to get out on the mountain for a few turns today. One of the buzz phrases of the early 21st Century - "Into the Cloud" best describes today.

Oh boy! What a day... 3 to 5 inches of new fluff on the mountain, plus some strategic, and not so strategic snow making, and Killington was a brand new resort this morning. The crust of yesterday was lurking like a great white shark just below the waves, but if you were able to keep on the bumps and away from the troughs, it was a beautiful day to ski at Killington.

"it's not ice if there are no fish under it" - F.I.S and Birch Ridge Inn Bartender - Merisa.... There were no shades of blue or green visible today, except in the perfect azure sky. But that did not mean that the ski surface presented on the mountains today was beautiful soft powder.

Well...maybe it was more like a ski hour and a half instead of a whole day... but it was interesting all the same. There was an element of foreboding driving to the resort this morning. Clouds were hanging low over the resort.

In classic MLK weekend fashion, below zero temperatures descended upon the Killington Region overnight. I say MLK fashion because for some reason MLK weekend seems like it is a binary... temps are either below zero for a January Freeze, or above 40 for a January Thaw.

3 days in a row... not quite a trend, but has been nice to get out on the slopes of Killington this week. Today, conditions at the resort were vastly improved from the last couple of days. Not great mid winter conditions, mind you, but the light snow that fell to earth yesterday afternoon and early last night really made a difference on the slopes.

It only took 4 days but now I can officially say that I skied in 2012. The end of the world as we know it may occur this year, at least as predicted by 2012 doomsday wonks, or not... but I can proudly say that I buckled up my boots, clicked on my skis, and once again enjoyed throwing myself down a mountain verifying the law of gravity and validating Newtonian Physics along the way.
